MATCHUP RECAP  by Joe Kerrigan

Senior attacker Chelsea Kovinsky and junior midfielder Kiki Shaw stifled their opposition as Roland Park Country School (4-2), beat Notre Dame Prep, (2-2), 12-4 on Saturday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The 5th annual PNC Lacrosse Invitational started off with the girl’s matchup between two IAAM rivals squaring off in an unfamiliar location in front of an excited crowd. Loyola University was the site for this early conference matchup between two storied high school programs.

Just one day after losing to Bryn Mawr, Roland Park Country School came out ready to tackle the challenge that is Notre Dame Prep who just one year ago made it to the IAAM Championship Game.

Both teams were clicking early, scoring four goals in the opening few minutes by four different players. Around the fifteen-minute mark of the first half, Roland Park began to seize control over the game. Goals by Kovinsky, Shaw, and sophomore midfielder Shannon Smith allowed Roland Park some breathing room.

Freshman attacker Nancy Halleron scored the third goal of the game for Notre Dame Prep with 7:14 remaining of the first half.

Thirty-seven seconds later, Kovinsky started to dominate the game with her ability to score at will. Kovinsky finished with a game-high five goals and notched one assist.

The Reds finished the game on a 7-1 scoring run and controlled the game throughout the majority of the second half.

Notre Dame Prep controlled the shots in the second half, outshooting the Reds eleven to five and finished the game with ten more ground balls.

Senior defender Annika Meyer led the way for Notre Dame Prep with five groundballs and two caused turnovers, while Halleron and senior attacker Hannah Mardiney led the offense.

Junior goalie Amber Bustard held the Blazers to just four goals on eighteen total shots and finished the contest with nine saves. Shaw finished the game with four points, two goals and two assists, and Smith had three goals.
